Guided Fly Fishing Programs

ReelFlyRod.com Outfitters (RFR) guides anglers for brown and rainbow trout, smallmouth, carp, and white bass in and around the southwestern region of Ohio and southeastern Indiana. Our rivers and lakes include the Mad River, Great Miami, Stillwater, Whitewater, Twin Creek, Brookville Tailwater, Caesar Creek and the Little Miami Rivers. Our professional staff is experienced and passionate about the sport and focuses on educating the client on techniques such as reading water, casting, fly selection, presentation, and the species biology. Each guided trip is customized to the needs and wants of the client.

Famous “Downtown Get Down”

One of our favorite programs that clients have absolutely loved is the “Downtown Get Down”.  Designed as an urban fishery with the Dayton skyline in the background, this program allows anglers the opportunity to target smallmouth on all 4 of our downtown rivers; Great Miami, Stillwater, Mad River, and Wolf Creek in 1 day. We offer half and full day guided trips during late March from October.

Great Miami River Program

The Great Miami River system is home to some of the best smallmouth fishing in southwestern Ohio. Starting from Indian Lake, the Great Miami flows over 170 miles to its confluence with the Ohio River. The largest river we guide, the Great Miami offers exceptional angling for smallmouth and the potential hookup on other species including pike, gar, musky, and catfish. We focus our guided services from Troy, OH, south to Springboro, OH.

Our guide season for smallmouth starts around late March through October. Summer time is our best time on the Great Miami for accessibility and different angling strategies.  We offer both full day and half-day walk and wade guided trips on the Great Miami. Late in 2017, we do plan to implement float trips from our 16’ StealthCraft Superfly Drift boat.

Mad River Programs

The Mad River is Ohio’s top premier trout and smallmouth fishery. From its origin in Bellefontaine, the Mad River receives dozens of coldwater infusions flowing to its confluence with the Great Miami River in Dayton making this Ohio’s largest coldwater fishery.  Between West Liberty and Springfield, OH, the Mad River is a premier all year-round brown trout fishery. Our programs run all year long and offer both half day and full day walk and wade trips. We will be offering float trips along the southern stretches of the Mad River in late 2017.

South of Springfield, the Mad River changes to a smallmouth fishery. Our trips concentrate in the downtown section from Fairborn to its confluence in downtown Dayton along the Five Rivers MetroParks corridor. The hotter summer months are some of the best times to focus on the Mad River smallmouth bite.

Brookville Tailwater, Indiana Program

Brookville Tailwater (East Fork of the Whitewater River) is Indiana’s premier tail-water trout fishery. Originating as the outflow of Brookville Lake, Brookville Tailwater offers year round trout fishing for rainbows and brown trout. This is one of our most technical fisheries, but offers the chance for trophy size trout. We only offer full day walk and wade trips due to location from the fly shop. The best times of the year to fish the tail-water are the March-June and Oct-Dec time frame.

Stillwater River Program

The Stillwater River is one of the best smallmouth fisheries in our region. From its origins in Union City, OH to its confluence with the Great Miami River in downtown Dayton, the Stillwater offers some of the finest smallmouth opportunities. The Stillwater also hosts a variety of other species including Carp, Catfish, and Rock Bass. Our smallmouth season on the Stillwater starts in late March and runs through early to late October. Our guides concentrate on fishing the section between Covington down to the confluence with the Great Miami River. We offer both half day and full day walk and wade trips. We are considering offering float trips later in 2017-2018.

Little Miami River Program

One of Ohio’s National and State Scenic Rivers, the Little Miami is the longest river (111 mi) where we fish for smallmouth. Our guides target smallmouth around the origins in Yellow Springs and fish all the way down to the confluence with the Ohio River. Anglers can target smallmouth on small creek scenarios or larger faster flows with spey and switch rods. Carp, Catfish, Rock Bass, Gar, White Bass, and Stripers are also found in the Little Miami rivershed. We offer half day and full day walk and wade trips. Late in 2017, we will be offering float trips in from Centerville to Morrow/Cincinnati area. Best times of the year to fish the Little Miami are late March through early October.

Twin Creek Program

Twin Creek is one of the cleanest streams in Ohio. One of our favorite hopper smallmouth fisheries, this is the creek to go to during the hottest days of the summer. Protected by Germantown MetroPark, the Twin Creek will seclude you with one of Dayton’s finest park systems. Our trips concentrate around the Germantown and Twin Creek MetroParks. We offer half and full day guided walk and wade trips during the best times of the year to fish the Twin Creek is June through Sept.

Caesar Creek/White Bass Program

Our closest lake to the fly shop, Caesar Creek is over 2800 surface acres surround the small town of Waynesville, OH. Caesar Creek is known for its largemouth, white bass, musky, and catfish species. Our guides concentrate on fishing the northern creeks that feed the lake. We specialize on the white bass run during April through May. We offer half and full day walk and wade trips. We do not currently offer musky guided trips or trips out in the lake, but we will be incorporating this program later in the future. We would encourage you to book early for the white bass run on Caesar Creek as this is a short seasonal fishery and dates book quick.

Whitewater River, Indiana Program

The Whitewater River is Indiana’s southern premier smallmouth fishery.  As this river is over 100 miles long, we target the section between Brookville and West Harrison where it crosses into Ohio. This is a larger river, similar to the Great Miami River offers many exceptional opportunities for smallmouth along with white bass, catfish, and carp.  We offer full day walk and wade trips only. Best times of the year for targeting smallmouth are April through October.

Tips or Gratuity

Did you have a good time? Did you learn more than expected? Expectations met? Our guides at ReelFlyRod.com will always strive to deliver the best experience while on our home waters.  Gratuity is always a question with new clients. Gratuity is a way to show the guide that the day was successful and met expectations. The fly-fishing industry suggests 10-20% is standard when fishing with a guide as a way to gauge how our guide serviced you throughout the day. While not mandatory, tips are much appreciated by your guide who is working very hard to make the experience on the water, one not to forget.

Meeting Time, Location, and Contact Information

Our guide will contact you a week prior to your trip to discuss the current river conditions, meeting time, location, and food/drink preparation. If you have any questions about the day’s trip, this would be the time to discuss with your guide your ultimate expectations, skills, and knowledge that you would like to gain from the guided trip.

What to Bring

Your guide will provide all the necessary equipment including fly rod, fly reel, flies, and terminal tackle. We encourage you to bring your own equipment, but will provide if necessary. All of our guides are using both high end and more economical outfits if you would like to test drive the latest gear or if you are interested in purchasing your own outfit.
